Compare brightness, depth and undertone. Scarlet is a warmer reference, cherry red is cooler, and burgundy introduces a deeper direction.
Use a neutral reference
Put the options against the same white background. This makes the difference between an orange edge and a purple edge easier to see.
Build a supporting palette
Choose a neutral or a single companion colour after selecting the red. Adding several accents first can make it harder to judge the main shade.
